Enex opens geothermal district heating system in China
Sustainable geothermal energy replaced coal in Xian Yang on december 3rd 2006 when ENEX-China formally opened phase I of the district heating system. The Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Valgerdur Sverrisdottir, said she was extremely proud to note that Icelandic knowledge was contributing to keeping Chinese households warm and develop pollution-free and sustainable energy resources.
Icelandic-Chinese joint venture
The geothermal heating system a Joint Venture between Shaanxi Geothermal Energy Development Co. Ltd. (CGCO) and Enex China. The first phase of the project now completed, was the construction and operation of a geothermal district heating system, which services three colleges in the city of Xian Yang, consisting of a total of 170,000 m2 that until now burned fossil fuels for heating. The next phase, a € 47 million investment, is a substantial expansion of the district heating system to include a new residential area in Xian Yang, a city of 5 million inhabitants. The project is recognised having the potential to become the largest of its kind in the world.
Icelandic scientific and technical capabilities for improving the environment
"The project in Xian Yang is very important to ENEX-China as it proves the company’s ability to utilize its scientific and technical capabilities for improving the environment anywhere in the world,” says Asgeir Margeirsson, Chairman of Enex and director at Orkuveita Reykjavikur.
