Iceland Lures Hollywood Stars with Scenery and 14% Rebate

With its stunning scenery, surprisingly mild climate, and new 14 percent reimbursement program for all filming expenses, Iceland is attracting major movie productions.

Reykjavík, Iceland, January, 2007 – Iceland has always been popular with Hollywood directors for its unique landscape, mild weather, and seasoned production crews. Now the producers will be just as happy, with a new incentive from the Icelandic government that reimburses14 percent of all production expenses.

In the recent past, Iceland has been the backdrop for films like “Flags of our Fathers,” “Die Another Day,” and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” among many others. These productions benefited from Icelandrsquo;s favorable tax codes and European distribution, but the Film in Iceland Agency, working with the Invest in Iceland Agency and the Icelandic government, is hoping that increasing the reimbursement of all expenses to 14 percent will generate even more movie magic.

The rebate, however, isn’t the only thing going for the island. Situated midway between the US and Europe, it has a climate that is mild year-round. It is close to the Arctic Circle, which creates almost continuous shooting light during the summer months and dark, brooding light during the winter. Add to this mix the black sand beaches, multi-colored volcanic mountains, and raging rivers, and you have a location scout’s dream.

For such a small island, Iceland also has a large group of skilled production companies. They have experience with everything from small television projects to multi-million dollar movies, and have been widely praised by directors shooting on location. The country has a developed infrastructure and service industry to cater to the needs of film crews, and the road system connects all points of interest within the country.
